Please return all library materials by Dec. 21

The end of the semester is approaching. AUP students – undergraduate and graduate – should return all library items by December 21, 2011. Books can be returned at the Service Desk during Regular Hours or using the external book drop 24/7. Unreturned materials will be considered lost and automatically billed to the student account. Students pre-registered for Spring 2012 may have their accounts validated to borrow books during the winter break. Requests should be made in person at the Library or by sending an e-mail to userservices@aup.fr (clearly stating your full name, AUP ID number). Thanks for your understanding.

Library Open House with Neil Gordon

Tuesday, December 6, from 16h55-18h15, the AUP Library has the great pleasure to invite the community to our next Open House, this time with Vice President and Dean of the University, Neil Gordon. Neil Gordon has written three novels: The Gun Runner’s Daughter (2000), The Sacrifice of Isaac (2003), and The Company You Keep (2004). His latest novel, The Company You Keep, is being made into a major motion picture directed by Robert Redford. On December 6, Neil Gordon will discuss his three novels and will talk about the author’s role when a novel becomes a motion picture. Students, faculty and staff are welcome to attend. Exceptionally, the Library will make the main reading room available for this event.

Database Ebook ‘Google-like’ search trial

Due to student demand, the library is currently testing an integrated search engine that will search many databases and ebooks simultaneously. The search may seem to take a bit longer than usual – it is searching SEVENTEEN ebook providers and databases with ONE SEARCH! Give it a try.

You are NOT getting all of the results from each one but only the most relevant. Please let us know what you think of it. Write to library@aup.edu and tell us your opinion of ONE SEARCH. If you would like to learn how to use it better, look at this help page or make an appointment to see Sally Murray.

Trials: EasyBib and Books24x7

EasyBib is an automatic bibliography composer. When you have sources you need to cite properly for your research paper, EasyBib will help you format your sources quickly and accurately. Access to EasyBib is available through the end of July.

Books24x7 is an e-book platform providing access to over 22,000 total titles. Since its launch in 1999, Books24x7 has grown steadily in number of publishers who contribute to these vast collections and in comprehensive reference resources covering IT, engineering, business, finance, economics, accounting, and more… AUP currently has the IT and Wellbeing collections on trial through the end of June.

AUP Graduate & Undergraduate students must return all library materials by May 13, 2011.

Unreturned materials are considered lost and will be billed to your student account.

Books may be returned to the book-drop outside the library entrance 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Extended late-night hours from May 2 to 10

In order to give students more time to study before the finals, the Library will remain open until 03:00 every night from May 2 to 10 and until 06:00 on May 8. Please be aware however that the Service Desk will be keeping its regular schedule, closing at 20:00 weekdays, at 18:00 Saturday, and remaining closed all day Sunday.

Trials: Aluka and Filmakers Library Online

Aluka (African scholarly resources) is an international, collaborative initiative building an online digital library of scholarly resources from and about Africa. Aluka includes a wide variety of high-quality scholarly materials, ranging from archival documents, periodicals, books, reports, manuscripts, and reference works, to three-dimensional models, maps, oral histories, plant specimens, photographs, and slides. Aluka is accessible on the Library webpage through June 4.

Filmakers Library Online (documentaries) provides award-winning documentaries with relevance across the curriculum: race and gender studies, human rights, globalization and global studies, multiculturalism, international relations, criminal justice, the environment, bioethics, health, political science and current events, psychology, arts, literature, and more. It presents points of view and historical and current experiences from diverse cultures and traditions worldwide. It provides 708 titles, equaling approximately 585 hours. Filmakers Library Online is accessible on the Library webpage through May 17.

Color photocopying and printing is now available at the Library

A new Sharp color photocopier/printer/scanner machine has recently been acquired by the Library to replace both the old black and white photocopy machine and printer. The rates per copy are as follows:

Photocopies:

A4 B&W: 1 unit / 0.10 €
A4 Color: 2 units / 0.20 €
A3 B&W: 2 units / 0.20 €
A3 Color: 4 units / 0.40 €

Printing:

A4 B&W: 1 unit / 0.05 €
A4 Color: 2 units / 0.20 €
A3 B&W: 2 units / 0.20 €
A3 Color: 4 units / 0.40 €
